The National Football League has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:

The incident follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a central figure in a streaming series that explored his influence in developing the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.
